No. 3: Art Fosters a Positive Sense of Self—Especially When Confronted by Challenges
Life is filled with challenges—moments of uncertainty, self-doubt and emotional upheaval. Over the years, I’ve found that art is one of the most powerful tools I can use to help me navigating those experiences. Through creative expression (such as drawing, painting and writing), I’ve learned new ways to process my emotions, build resilience and—ultimately—gained a deeper understanding of myself. Art has been a steady companion, reminding me of my own strength and capacity for growth, even during difficult times.
Creativity as a Reflection of Inner Strength
When I create, I engage in an ongoing dialogue with myself. The blank canvas, the brushstrokes, the evolving composition; mirror my emotions, thoughts and struggles. In this way, art doesn’t demand perfection—it invites exploration. There is freedom in knowing that I can make mistakes, adjust and continue moving forward. This process serves as a reminder that I am adaptable, that I can overcome obstacles, and that I am capable of transformation.
Each entry into my journal, each painting I undertake and every creative project I agree to become a testament to my tenacity and perseverance. Even when a piece isn’t turning out the way I envisioned, I remind myself that I have the ability to shift my approach. The same is true in life—challenges are not dead ends, but opportunities to learn and grow.
Art as a Safe Space for Self-Expression
One of the greatest gifts art has given me is a safe space to express myself without fear of judgment. There are many times words fail me or my emotions feel too complex to articulate. In those moments, I turn to my art practice. The act of creating allows me to process feelings that I might otherwise try to ignore or leave unaddressed. Whether it’s through my writing, the bold strokes of my large acrylic paints, the delicate layers of watercolor and ink or the intricate details of an owls face, each mark carries meaning.
As such, I encourage participants in my Art & Wellness Programs to embrace this freedom of expression. Art doesn’t have to look a certain way or meet anyone’s expectations. It is a deeply personal journey, one that can foster self-acceptance and confidence when we remove judgement and unrealistic exceptions of ourselves. The simple act of making something—regardless of skill level—can be incredibly affirming.
Building Resilience Through the Creative Process
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’m a firm believer that engaging in art teaches patience and persistence. There are times when a painting doesn’t come together the way I had hoped, when frustration sets in or when doubt creeps into my mind. But I’ve learned that pushing through these moments, making adjustments and trusting the process ultimately leads me to something meaningful and something I am proud of—which isn’t always the final piece or artwork. This practice of resilience through creativity translates into other areas of life as well.
Art reminds me that failure is not an endpoint, but part of the journey. It has taught me that I art as well as life requires of us (if not demands of us) to get comfortable with starting over, reworking our ideas and approaching problems from new angles. These creative skills I’ve developed now extend far beyond my studio—they help me navigate personal and professional challenges I’m confronted by with a sense of curiosity and determination that I wouldn’t have had without developing my art practice .
Finding Confidence Through Creativity
When I create, I affirm my own voice and vision. I remind myself that I have something valuable to express. Art has given me a sense of ownership over my experiences, allowing me to shape my own narrative rather than be defined by external circumstances.
