No. 1: Art Teaches Us to Be Curious

The Power of Exploration and Play

Curiosity is at the heart of creativity. Every time I pick up a paintbrush, experiment with a new medium, or explore an unfamiliar subject, I am engaging in the art of curiosity. Art teaches me to ask questions, take risks and embrace the unknown. It encourages me to wonder, "What if?" and then follow that question wherever it leads.

Embracing the Process Over Perfection

One of the most powerful lessons art has taught me is that the process is just as important—if not more so—than the final result. When I let go of expectations and simply allow myself to explore, I often discover something unexpected and beautiful. Creativity isn’t about following a rigid plan; it’s about remaining open to possibility.

I see this all the time in my Art & Wellness Programs. When people allow themselves to experiment with color, texture, and form without the pressure of creating something "perfect," they find joy in the act of making. They tap into a childlike sense of wonder and freedom, where mistakes become stepping stones rather than obstacles.

Cultivating a Sense of Play

Art invites play into my life, something that many of us lose as we grow older. When I paint or draw, I strive to give myself permission to explore without judgment. Play fuels curiosity, and curiosity fuels innovation. Some of my best creative breakthroughs have come from moments when I was simply playing with materials, testing out new ideas, making mistakes and seeing what happens.

Curiosity Beyond the Canvas

Art teaches me to stay curious beyond the studio as well. It encourages me to notice the details in the world around me—the way light filters through tree branches, the intricate patterns on a butterfly’s wings, the shifting colors of the sky at sunset. This heightened awareness brings a deeper appreciation for life and all its complexities.

Curiosity also helps me approach challenges with a sense of openness. Instead of seeing obstacles as roadblocks, I view them as opportunities to learn and adapt. Creativity has taught me that there is always another way, another perspective, another solution waiting to be uncovered.

Inviting Curiosity Into Your Life

If you're looking to invite more curiosity into your daily routine, start by setting aside time for creative exploration. Whether it’s sketching, painting, journaling or even taking a walk with the intention of noticing something new, give yourself permission to wonder. Ask, "What if?" and follow where that question takes you.
